Volunteering

Written by Administrator. Posted in Get Involved

There are many different opportunities for you to get involved with the SEE ME project, you can:

Volunteer to join the project committee
Volunteer to interview people (training provided)
Volunteer to tell your story
Volunteer to take part in theatre, music & digital media workshops
Use your existing skills/expertise to support the project i.e. IT skills, project management experience

What if I don’t have the right skills?

Don’t worry we will train volunteers. For example, we can train you in interviewing and transcribing skills. Once trained volunteers will interview elders from BME communities across Wiltshire recording & transcribing their life stories. We can also enable you to learn skills such as IT and in helping to run and manage a community project. There is something for everyone.

What if I cannot afford to volunteer?

We want as many people to be able to get involved, so we will also pay for your travel expenses and associated costs.

All we will ask is that you complete our volunteer form and agree to the aims of the project.

Research

Written by Administrator. Posted in Get Involved

SEE ME is keen not only to record the stories of BME communities in Wiltshire today, but also explore the presence of BME individuals and communities throughout Wiltshire’s history. Our earliest written evidence dates back to 1586, with an entry for Maria Mandula “stranger and Aethiop” in the burial register for Calne; while there are numerous references to black people in Wiltshire during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Some people also migrated from around the world to our county throughout the twentieth century. Much of our research will take place at the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre, exploring the Wiltshire Archive Service collections, while we also hope that our project will uncover archives from individuals and community archives that are not yet deposited at the history Centre.

We would like to set up a research group, so if you would like to get involved (no experience required, we will provide training) contact:

Tell Us Your Story

Written by Administrator. Posted in Get Involved

Everyone has a history and we would like some of yours. People contribute to the history of Wiltshire and their communities in countless ways, infact if you have ever lived in Wiltshire you are part of its evolving story. However, often people’s stories remain hidden simply because no-one has asked them! This is particularly true for people from BME communities, so help us to change this.

If you or someone you know would like to share their story with us, so it can be recorded for future generations by one of our project volunteers, then please contact us at:
